Voices of the Vilna Ghetto: Cultural Life

The Vilna Ghetto existed under conditions of hunger, persecution and constant danger, yet cultural life continued within its walls. Concerts, poetry readings, lectures and theater performances became ways of preserving intellectual and communal life while the Jewish world of Vilna was being destroyed.

Before the war, Vilnius had been known throughout the Jewish world as the “Jerusalem of Lithuania,” one of Europe’s great centers of Jewish learning and culture. Inside the ghetto, writers, musicians, actors and educators continued that tradition under circumstances in which even ordinary life had become uncertain.

For many inhabitants, culture became more than entertainment. It was a declaration that persecution could control almost every aspect of their lives without completely extinguishing their humanity.

Ada Gens-Ustjanauskas attended many performances in the Vilna Ghetto theater, giving her a firsthand view of the cultural life that continued inside the ghetto. Her memories preserve not only what was performed, but what those evenings meant to people living under constant threat.

Culture in a World Under Siege.

This short film brings together Ada Gens-Ustjanauskas’s firsthand memories of attending performances in the Vilna Ghetto theater with testimony from other survivors, exploring the role of music, theater and cultural life within the community.

Under Jacob Gens’s administration, the ghetto developed an extraordinary cultural life that included theater, music, lectures and other forms of artistic expression. These institutions carried forward elements of a Jewish cultural tradition that had existed in Vilna for centuries, even as the community itself faced destruction.

The testimonies preserved here reveal why these performances mattered. They offered moments of connection, dignity and continuity within a world defined by uncertainty and loss.

Through the voices of those who were there, the film preserves not simply the fact that cultural life continued, but the human meaning it carried for the people inside the ghetto.
